I am always amazed when I walk into a primary classroom that DOES NOT have a Word Wall. Why? Because the Word Wall concept as so well explained in Cunningham and Hall's Month by Month (and other) books is one of the easiest, most powerful, and useful vocabulary and spelling teaching tools I know. Using only 10-15 minutes a day of whole class instructional time, teachers can ensure that about 130 important sight words are memorized; at least 25 common spelling patterns are mastered and applied in decoding and spelling; and handwriting skills are developed. Plus, all this is done in an active, fun, engaging way--- clapping, changing, writing in the air, and so on.
